Kenya and the LPGA?

And the 2007 professional golf season is underway – the men of the PGA have staged an elite winners-only event, a full field event, and a celebrity-filled 90-hole marathon in the desert.  And what of the LPGA you ask? Well, our favorite tour started in Sun City, no not the retirement community outside of San Diego, but the manufactured enclave in a remote area of South Africa! To further excite its growing fan base – it was a World Cup team event with only 22 two-player teams representing their countries and going after 1.2 million dollars of unofficial prize money. And, if that wasn’t lame enough, virtually the entire field was composed of B-level players … Sweden, who won last year with Annika and Lotte .. neither there!  Lorena, player of the year?  No Mexico team at all!  USA? Julie Inkster and Pat Hurst … no Christie .. no Paula .. no drawing power!  And the winner?  Paraguay – led by 2006 Rookie of the Year Juileta Granada and her partner Celeste Troche.  While it was certainly validation for Julieta, let’s not forget that she won almost as much as the entire purse, 1 million dollars, at the ADT Championship last year. But, if there was a saving grace in all this Season opening silliness, it was the ability of those of us who comment on the tour to get to mention Kenya, Brazil and Norway – three golf deprived countries that fielded teams in the event. Hey Carolyn, you may not be as controversial as you were last season, but you have earned the first LPGA unplayable lie of 2007 for staging such a sorry season-opener! Commissioner Bivens, take a penalty stroke and play on!
